NNAS Gold Navigation Feedback
"I undertook the gold navigation course with Clare, and it is for experienced navigators to use the techniques and skills they have developed over intricate and difficult terrain. Clare took our group over the Kinder plateau where she challenged us to find complex contour features both large and small. Clare is inspirational and professional in her approach and is extremely patient and supportive. She puts you at ease and uses humour as a way of connecting with you whilst getting the best from you …. I always learn something new when I am out on the hills with Clare and come away with a sense of achievement. I would recommend any experienced navigator to undertake the gold award with Clare as their assessor."

"I would recommend Clare Kelly and the Gold Navigation course without reservation. It's one of the best things I have done for a long time.
Clare is so relaxed, assured and interested in her subject that I was quickly fully absorbed by the navigation tasks and didn't feel nervous. The women-only environment was also helpful for me in this respect.
I really enjoyed the whole experience of being up on Kinder finding nooks and crannies and features I had never seen before. Clare is very unhurried and calm and supports you to work things out for yourself. The course is all about being confident to explore off the beaten track. It opens up a whole new layer of enrichment in how you experience the landscape as you have to notice things you would normally miss and the ability to leave the paths behind and explore where your curiosity and sense of adventure takes you is fantastic.
I finished the course with a wonderful sense of achievement and enthused to continue my navigation adventures further. Big thanks to Clare."

“I cannot recommend the NNAS Bronze Navigation Course run by Navigation for Women highly enough. I have been hill-walking for many years so wasn’t quite sure what to expect but I learnt so much and with some great extra hints and tips too. Clare is an excellent teacher and facilitator both in the classroom and on the hill, with an under-stated but incredibly effective way of helping you take all the learning on board. Being able to do the course in a women only environment was also very empowering.
I came away not only with a vastly increased practical knowledge around navigation but with the confidence to go away and apply it to my walking. Having done this course will make such a difference to my level of enjoyment and exploration in the hills; I cant wait to get out there.”

Having so little experience I arrived at Hathersage with some trepidation as to my ability to complete the
course; particularly as I had a more experienced friend with me. However I was not overwhelmed with information, the elements were explained clearly and the tasks delegated on the walk reassured me that I would cope.
Clare managed to work with both my friend and I at the same time improving our knowledge. The weekend experience was informative, fun and gave me a huge sense of achievement and confidence, I would recommend it to friends and family and know it will greatly improve my recreation time.Doriann, Derbyshire

I have just spent a most enjoyable weekend on the Bronze NNAS navigation course in Hathersage, Derbyshire (Aug 18). Clare …… was delightful. In manner, in gentility and in her humour. She taught and lead with confidence and made the entire learning experience easy. We studied and practiced all that we would need to know to lead walks independently. Map reading and using the compass.
Each of the two days began with a brief time in the classroom followed by a good walk, learning on the move. This proved very effective and an easy comradeship developed within the group as the day rolled on. We had a great deal of fun on the way to passing the course.
I enjoyed my time so much that I am thinking of doing the silver course. Not because I need it necessarily but because I had such a wonderful time in Clare’s group.
Highly recommended not only for those wishing to lead walking groups but also for those who want to reconnect with map reading and also for those wishing to walk and be outdoors with like minded people.

I would thoroughly recommend this course. By using a map of the local area and quickly moving to staged navigational challenges in the real outdoor environment , Clare builds your skills and confidence while keeping you happily engaged at an appropriate level for your experience , so you hardly notice how much you are learning .By the end of the second day I couldn't wait to plan and walk a hike which I have now done with great satisfaction. And in the relaxed supportive atmosphere I had some laughs and made a new friend.

NNAS Bronze Navigation Feedback
The course exceeded my expectations. The atmosphere was relaxed and the course was well balanced between classroom time and practical experience on the hills. Plenty of time was given to make sure I really understood what I was learning.
I feel like the course has opened up lots of possibilities for me, I no longer need to stick to marked trails, and the next time I attempt the Pennine Way I’ll have the skills to help me finish!
Exceptional value for money.

Clare explained everything clearly and her teaching wasn't rushed. There was a lot to take in and she was happy to go over areas we didn't quite understand. She ensured we all took an active part and was very encouraging.

Thank you very much for helping me learn how to find a puddle in the middle of a moor using a map and compass – would never have thought I’d be able to do that on my first course! Plus, lovely company.

I found it really useful and enjoyable and had lots of "light bulb" moments where things I hadn't understood before just fell into place.

Did the course meet your expectations?
Yes and in a way exceeded in that I had not expected to feel so skilled up (at this level – more to learn)

It was hard work, as we learned such a lot, but that was the whole point. The explanations were really clear and we had lots of examples to work through during both days. I felt completely fine to give it a go, as we learned a lot from our mistakes and the day had a supportive feel where we were figuring it out together.
It’s left me feeling really encouraged to learn more and to get outside and practice!

I enjoyed it all. I thought there was the right balance of classroom and practical content. Clare’s method of assessment was good in that we were being continually assessed during the two days without being too conscious of it. Clare was mentally noting when we had mastered particular skills and techniques. She quizzed us on more general issues when we stopped for lunch in a relaxed conversational way. The course was challenging but in a relaxed enjoyable way which created the right environment for learning.

The course was really good. Clare, you definitely know your stuff and I had every confidence that you knew exactly what you were talking about. I feel I consolidated some of the learning from Bronze and at this stage feel much more confident with timings, pacing and I definitely should be able to find my way. I now just need to practice so I build on what I’ve learnt!

"I thought that there would be more compass work (what I thought I needed), but in fact I just needed to be able to interpret a map better!
What aspect of the course did you enjoy most /least?
Most: realizing how much info is actually on a map, if I learn to see it, and gaining the confidence to follow it!
Least: having to create a walk from scratch - simply because it was so difficult, but this was probably one of the most valuable parts of the course – something I will actually use.
Thanks, Clare. I really enjoyed the weekend. Learned valuable skills that I will definitely use, and I intend to create a walk of my own very soon. "

"Clare organised a course for some of us doing the final leg of our Land's End to John O'Groats walk. This final 210 miles was through very remote parts of Scotland - no phone signal, no roads, etc, etc - so good navigation skills essential. The course was very well put together. It was an excellent mix of theory and practice. We learned a lot, as well as having a good time - and we got to John O'Groats with no wrong turns!"
-- Caroline
"I always struggled to learn how to use a compass, but Clare really encouraged me and we had a great day out AND I learned lots from her!"
-- Jo, Hebden Bridge
"As a woman from the city with a short attention span, Clare had her work cut out. She taught me my navigation skills in a clear, logical manner with amazing patience and humour. Incredibly, due to her expertise, I passed the Walking Group Leader Award and now work in the outdoor industry."
-- Vicky, London
"Clare is patient and gives excellent tuition. She is very knowledgeable and passionate about her subject area which makes her courses fun too! I recommend her without any hesitation."
-- Jo, Leeds
"Clare is a kind and experienced teacher. The course fulfilled my expectations and taught me the importance of good map reading. With patience and good humour, Clare built up my skills and confidence in orienteering."
