Walk Description

Stanage Edge, one of the best known of the Peak District's iconic gritstone edge, is the focus for this 8 mile day walk. We will head up to the edge from the lovely village of Hathersage through a mixture of green fields and woodland. On reaching the edge, we will head eastwards taking in the spectacular views from this high viewpoint. We will see abandoned millstones and pop into Robin Hood's cave, hidden away beneath the gritstone tors above.

At the eastern end of Stanage we will descend to Upper Burbage bridge before heading over Higger Tor, a mass of weathered gritstone boulders and another perfect vantage point affording long reaching views. From here, we head back towards Hathersage across moorland and on a quiet woodland track.

Hathersage has a great selection of outdoor shops and cafes / pubs and there will be time to explore these at the end of the walk.

Walk Description

The Dark peak area of the Peak District is renowned for its series of gristone edges. This walk will link a series of these dramatic features giving us a whole range of panoramas. The walk starts at Grindleford station and from here we head to the first of our edges, Burbage Rocks. These link nicely with perhaps the best known of the Peak District edges, Stanage. We follow this before heading down across rough moorland to hit Bamford Edge below. The views from here are stunning - taking in Win Hill and Ladybower reservoir. We end at Bamford station where there are trains back to Grindleford.

Walk Details: 13.5 miles, 650m ascent. This is a strenuous walk, involving rough ground and walking off path for a section of the walk. It requires a good level of fitness. The walk is linear starting and finishing at train stations on the Hope Valley line which links Sheffield and Manchester. There is parking at both stations.
