About Navigation for Women

My name is Clare Kelly and I run Her on a Hill, Navigation for Women and Magnetic North Navigation. My aim with Navigation for Women is to enable more women to explore the outdoors safely and more extensively by teaching them the basics of good navigation in a friendly, supportive and non-competitive environment.

I am a qualified Mountain Leader and National Navigation Award Scheme course director and have worked in the outdoor industry for  over 25 years. I began my career working as a guide for Exodus, one of the UK's most respected adventure travel company. While with Exodus, I led guided walks in Italy, as well as Nepal, Morocco, Mexico, Belize and Guatemala, Austria, and Spain.

From 2007 to 2018, I worked as a guide for Walking Women Ltd, a company offering women-only guided walking holidays. I have guided holidays in Italy, the Peak District, the Lake District, the Yorkshire Dales,  the Cairngorms and Nepal. From 2012 to 2018, I was employed as Walking Women’s office manager and combined this role with my guiding.

In 2019, I decided to take the plunge and set up my own women's walking business, Her on a Hill, which offers guided walking holidays, guided day walks and outdoor creative workshops as well as navigation courses.

And most recently in 2020, I launched Magnetic North Navigation which is aimed at map reading skills for beginners and those who would like private tuition at any level. Based in Hathersage and Edale in the Peak District, the courses are open to all including family bookings.

I am a keen walker although I came to it late in life - I didn't walk anywhere until my very late 20s going straight in at the deep end with a trek in Nepal. I really love teaching navigation and helping women to develop new skills, gain confidence in their map and compass reading and put these skills into practice in the hills of the UK and beyond.
